Consolidate Services Better with Convergent Charging Systems

Back before large grocery chains and big box stores became the norm, people would have to visit specialized retailers for all of their weekly shopping. One family would have to visit a bakery for bread, a deli or butcher for meat, a farmer’s market for produce, and a liquor store for alcohol.

Today, we can walk into a Super Walmart and get everything taken care of in one go, no waiting. The same principles of consolidation apply to the telecommunications industry. Once upon a time, consumers needed separate vendors for their phone line, their television connection, and their Internet connection. Today, people rely on one provider for all of those services. This is only possible through convergent charging systems.

Improve Control Over Telecom Services with Convergent Charging System

Convergent charging systems allow for the simultaneous management of all users and all services. It can include both prepaid and postpaid billing models, and it can account for different types of services like mobile telephony, mobile data, and broadband TV. Convergent charging systems can monitor balances for each piece of media in real-time. For example, a convergent charging system can authenticate the subscriber, check the account balance, and approve the user for connection all in the time between the user hits “power” on their remote control and the TV turns on. Also, a convergent billing system can determine which user has used up their data cap and can cancel service to just that line, so if one family member uses their prepaid allowance, another family member who has not used their balance yet will not be cut-off along with the user who has reached their cap.

Convergent Charging for Customer Convenience

Convergent charging systems can also notify a user when their balance is low. For example, a mobile data customer may pay for mobile voice calling and mobile hotspots through one provider. If their mobile hotspot data runs low, they will receive a text on their smartphone letting them know that they are close to their hotspot limit. To the user, this appears to be independent of their voice calling allowance. In reality, the convergent billing system is managing both their voice calling allowance and their hotspot allowance, but since it can monitor the hotspot service at the same time as the calling service, the user will only have to deal with their hotspot service turning off, not their calling capabilities.
